Visions Students’ Poems Included Inside Sacramento RT Buses

On Friday, October 7 two of our students that participated in the Find Your Voice writing program were honored for a special accomplishment at the 916 Ink Imaginarium. Maribella Smith and Lydia Robles are published writers and their poems were chosen by the Sacramento Poetry Center to appear inside Sacramento Regional Transit buses around the city!

This year 916 Ink worked with the Sacramento Poetry Center to bring students’ poems to the local RT system. Over 40 poems were submitted for review and six were chosen. The art will be displayed through January.

“This program inspires our students and helps them find a creative outlet to express themselves,” said Jody Graf, Executive Director at Visions In Education. “Students leave the class with a tangible accomplishment and skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.”

Fox40 News also came out to celebrate with us! Take a look at the clip here.

Lydia Robles’ Winning Poem – Harmonize

Can you hear my voice?
Will you listen to my sound?
It’s weak, and it’s pale,
When no one else is around.

It’s tremulous, and strained.
It’s raw, and all mine.
Because each voice needs another
To sound truly divine.

You sing your own song,
So sweet and unique.
And I’ll sing my own.
And maybe one day they’ll meet.

And we’ll sing the same notes.
And we’ll speak the same words.
And rejoice that our voices,
Have finally been heard.

Maribella Smith’s Winning Poem – One & Only

In the rain, soft and as gentle as mist
My moon comforts me burning my fears with her light

I sit under a peach tree
She tells me stories
I sing her songs
We are beautiful

We are happy we are one.

Visions Chosen to Receive Staples Foundation Grant!

Visions Chosen to Receive Staples Foundation Grant!

Each year the Staples Foundation allows their associates around the world to select local nonprofits to receive funding. The grant is part of the 2 Million & Change program and it encourages and supports local community engagement, educational, and job-related efforts.

This year Visions In Education was chosen to receive a $3,500 grant to support our Independent Study Academy. The money will be used for a new “Reach Your Potential” scholarship program that will support our 9-12 Independent Study graduates and provide them additional funds to further their higher education goals. Staples chose Visions due to our commitment to improving our local community and support for at-risk youth.

Visions is honored to be recognized and rewarded for our education efforts. We strive to offer our students as many resources as possible to ensure their success in a rapidly changing world. We thank the Staples Foundation and our local Staples associate, Brandon Kavrell, for his recommendation and support.

In 2015, Staples distributed over $2.5 million in grants to 875 organizations to support various programs like job readiness for the homeless, academic scholarships, career exploration for high school students, and more.

Visions is Proud to Sponsor the Walk4Literacy

Visions is Proud to Sponsor the Walk4Literacy

Recognizing the importance of fighting illiteracy in our community, Visions is proud to sponsor the Walk4Literacy on Saturday, Oct. 15. 50 spots were available for students and their family members at no cost. Each walker also received a t-shirt.

The family-friendly, four-mile walk through Oak Park, Curtis Park, Midtown, and Downtown started three years ago in an effort to raise awareness about the literacy crisis among our children. It’s estimated that 2 out of 3 third graders read below grade level. Research shows that if students are still behind by the end of 4th grade, 74% of them will never catch up.

Why Should You Walk?

“Literacy is a health indicator for any society,” said Visions In Education Executive Director, Jody Graf. “Developing literacy is more than just developing someone’s reading skills. It is developing their thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving capacities … We can focus our attention in a lot of places, but increasing literacy will always yield a greater return on time invested.”

In 2015, the Walk4Literacy raised $15,000 for local programs to positively impact children’s literacy. Graf said Visions In Education supports the walk because, as educators, literacy is our primary interest. The research, she says, is clear that students with a strong vocabulary have greater ability to use language as a means to think through an idea/concept, reason, analyze, and draw conclusions, which ultimately ties to all learning.

Graf encourages families to participate in the walk because, in addition to raising funds to fight illiteracy, a large participation rate gets the attention of the community and states that literacy is important to us.

“People pay attention when they begin to see a critical mass in action,” said Graf. “Ten percent is what it takes to create critical mass for shifts in awareness to happen.”

The Walk4Literacy is organized by the Sacramento Public Library Foundation, Teach for America, and 916 Ink.

Students and families familiar with our writing programs may recognize 916 Ink due to their involvement and facilitation of our Find Your Voice writing courses. In addition to following the writing model of 916 Ink, our partnership with the program allows each course to culminate in the publication of a book that contains the students’ semester of work. The work 916 Ink does at Visions and within Sacramento is, according to Graf, profound.

“In my 30 years within education, I can say that this is the most transformational class I have experienced when it comes to developing a student’s voice,” said Graf. “916 Ink understands clearly that students who are able to form and express their thoughts are more likely to be the author of their thoughts and emotions, and not authored by their thoughts and emotions. This is a critical development for all of us, and especially our youth.”
