The California State Seal of Biliteracy recognizes graduating Seniors for demonstrating speaking, reading and writing proficiency in English and one or more non-English languages. It acknowledges students for their multilingual strengths and offers both career and college benefits. Proof of the Seal is recorded on student transcripts and signified by a medal to be worn by students at their Graduation Ceremony and a physical Seal decal that is affixed to student diplomas.

This Fall, over 50 qualifying graduates completed assessments in pursuit of the Seal. This is a record number for Visions, aided by 1% Better improvements that included:

• Expanding the Fall pool to include students who are graduating in the Spring who pre-qualified to assess early,
• Closer collaboration between Principals, Teachers, Counselors, and Assessment Services on informing students of their eligibility and motivating them to test, and 
• Partnering with the Sacramento County Office of Education on the early release of their Language Exam materials.

The latter allowed Visions to administer assessments in all languages for which staff are fluent, thereby reducing reliance on a more challenging, online assessment. These efforts paid off! The number of students earning Seals this Fall increased by 126% and the number of total Seals awarded increased by 108%.
