Adventure is out there! A group of 23 Visions Home School Academy fifth and sixth-grade students recently embarked on an exciting week of hands-on learning at Sly Park Science Camp. Surrounded by nature, students explored the outdoors through engaging educational activities, forged new friendships, and created memories that will last a lifetime. The experience provided a unique opportunity to learn while fostering curiosity, teamwork, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
The first day at camp kicked off with cabin check-ins, introductions, and discussions around expectations to help set a positive tone for the week ahead.
In the afternoon, students participated in their first outdoor learning experiences, including classes in Children’s Forest, Orienteering, and Field Study. Throughout the day, students showed curiosity, teamwork, and enthusiasm as they explored the outdoors and connected with one another.
As the sun began to set on their first day, students enjoyed games and activities in the recreation center, followed by a night hike through camp.
“It was a fantastic day full of memorable experiences, new friendships, and meaningful learning opportunities,” shared Ron Thomas, Associate Director of Equity and Student Engagement.
Students got right back to it on day 2 with another incredible day filled with adventure, learning, and lots of fun!
On the second day of camp, students spent time:
The students also began rehearsing their skits for Skit Night on the final evening of camp.
Throughout the final day of camp, students had the opportunity to dive deeper into some of their favorite activities, including the Challenge Wall, the Discovery Lab, and the Ecology Center.
Students also built forts, worked collaboratively with their peers, and met a few snakes while learning more about local wildlife!
The evening was filled with entertainment, reflection, appreciation, and celebration as the group concluded their final evening at camp performing their very own skits.
“We are incredibly proud of all of our students for their creativity, teamwork, and courage. Each performance brought laughter, energy, and smiles to everyone in attendance, and it was clear that the students truly enjoyed themselves,” shared Ron.
“Sly Park is a truly special experience. It was incredibly rewarding to watch our homeschool students explore, grow in confidence, build connections, and discover the joys of all the week had to offer. It was an unforgettable week filled with curiosity, adventure, and memories that last far beyond camp!”

Brittany Thurman, Credentialed Teacher
“I got to see our Visions students get out of their comfort zones and try so many new experiences, push through challenges and create great connections and memories during the days they were at camp. If any student is feeling hesitant to go to science camp I definitely suggest for them to do it. It will be one of their core memories for life.”
Axel Funes, Instructional Assistant
