Visions In Education recently partnered with Sacramento State University to host its Summer College Experience, giving 20 rising juniors and seniors an immersive introduction to college life.
During the three-day, two-night program, students lived in campus residence halls, dined in university facilities, attended classes, and participated in a variety of academic and recreational activities. The experience provided students with a firsthand look at what life as a college student can be like while helping them build confidence as they begin planning for their future.
The Summer College Experience introduced students to many aspects of university life, from navigating a college campus and attending classes to living in a residence hall alongside their peers.
Students toured the Sacramento State campus, learning what day-to-day life looks like for college students. Along the way, they explored academic buildings, student gathering spaces, dining facilities, and recreational opportunities while gaining a better understanding of the resources available to support student success.
The group also participated in a dedicated admissions workshop focused on the California State University application process. Students learned what steps they can take now to prepare for college and received hands-on guidance creating a Cal State Apply account, exploring application sections, and understanding tips for submitting a strong application. The workshop helped make the path to college feel more tangible and attainable.
Rather than simply hearing about college life, students had the opportunity to experience it for themselves.
As part of the program, students attended a college-level entrepreneurship course, giving them a glimpse into the expectations and pace of a university classroom. They observed how professors engage students in discussion while exploring topics such as innovation, business development, and entrepreneurial thinking.
Outside the classroom, students participated in activities designed to foster teamwork, creativity, and personal growth. The group visited the Exploratorium, where interactive exhibits encouraged hands-on learning and problem-solving. They also challenged themselves on a ropes course that promoted leadership, communication, and confidence-building. Additionally, students had the opportunity to participate in a game night in the dorms, or play pickleball or basketball on-campus during free time.
“The CSUS Summer Experience gives students the opportunity to explore college life before graduation, helping them envision what their future could look like while easing some of the uncertainty that comes with taking the next step after high school. One of the most rewarding parts of the experience is watching students build lasting friendships. It is always amazing to see how quickly they connect with one another.”

“The CSUS Summer Experience was an amazing opportunity for these students. We had several students who would be first generation college students in their family and some who never thought college was in their future. The reason this experience is so important is because the exposure students receive living on campus and participating in the activities helps them truly see college as something very attainable in their future. During the three days, several students shared how they feel more confident in pursuing college now and many have their eyes set on large dreams.”

The Summer College Experience gave students an authentic glimpse into life on a college campus while helping them develop independence, expand their skillsets, and explore future educational opportunities. By living, learning, and connecting alongside their peers, students left with a clearer vision of their future and the confidence to take the next steps toward achieving their goals.
