Student Spotlight: Creating a Brighter Future

During the pandemic, Mason M. discovered that online learning suited him well. He appreciated the flexibility to manage his own schedule, learn at a pace that worked for him and balance school with the activities he enjoyed.

“I had previously tried other schools that offered flexible hours but found that they disappointed me,” he shared.

In 2024, Mason found the learning environment he had been searching for when he enrolled in Visions’ Independent Study Academy.

“With Visions I am truly allowed to do everything at my own pace and have all the instruction from teachers that I need,” Mason said.

Now entering his senior year, Mason has found academic success while also growing personally through mentorship opportunities that have helped prepare him for life after high school.

Creativity Without Limits

One of Mason’s favorite parts of attending Visions has been the opportunity to explore his interests through enrichment vendors and student funds, which provide students with access to educational activities, experiences and materials that enhance their learning.

“Using enrichment vendors combined with these funds has given me an opportunity to delve into hobbies and passions that I never would’ve otherwise considered, making learning the most fun it has been in a long while.

Through these opportunities, Mason has been able to fully invest in his passion for visual art and other creative pursuits. Whether he’s creating digital illustrations, sketching, designing bracelets, crafting fursuits or making music, he enjoys expressing himself through a variety of artistic outlets.

He has also enjoyed discovering new interests through Visions’ wide selection of elective courses, allowing him to continue expanding his skills and creativity.

Building Confidence for College

While Mason has enjoyed exploring his creative passions, he has also taken important steps toward planning for his future through Visions’ Bridge to College Program.

Offered in partnership with Paper Wings Creative Consulting, LLC, Bridge to College supports first-generation college students in grades 10-12 as they prepare for higher education. The program provides mentorship, college guidance and practical skills to help students confidently navigate the transition to college.

For Mason, one of the most valuable parts of the experience was hearing directly from current college students who shared their firsthand experiences and advice.

“The Bridge to College program is the reason I feel confident enough to enroll in a college for the next fall semester.”

He also appreciated learning about the many opportunities college offers beyond the classroom.

“The program has highlighted specific local colleges, their clubs, and appropriate activities that college students partake in recreationally for those who may struggle with friendships,” he explained.

For students considering joining the program—even if they are unsure whether college is in their future—Mason encourages them to give it a chance.

“Even people that don’t plan to go to college should go, as the program offers a lot of advice that helps not only in college, but in high school. You’d be surprised how much college truly has to offer beyond academics.”

As Mason begins his senior year at Visions, he is looking toward the future with confidence. Thanks to a personalized learning experience, opportunities to pursue his creative passions and mentorship that has helped him prepare for college, he feels ready to take on whatever comes next.
