Student Spotlight: Driven to Learn

When Fabian M. came to Visions at the start of his junior year, he was looking for an educational experience that would give him the support he needed to succeed in his coursework while also giving him the opportunity to grow in the other areas of life he is passionate about.

At Visions, students receive a comprehensive system of support designed to address their unique needs and help them thrive as whole individuals. While it took Fabian some time to adjust to a new workflow, working closely with his teacher and settling into his routine helped him find his footing and begin to thrive.

Now, a year later, Fabian is preparing to enter his senior year in the Independent Study Academy with a growing sense of confidence and a clear vision for the future.

A Learning Experience Built Around Him

One of Fabian’s favorite parts of being a Visions student is having the ability to create a personalized learning plan that reflects his learning style, needs and interests. His individualized approach to education has allowed him to learn in a way that works best for him while also making time to explore the passions that extend beyond his schoolwork.

Throughout his time at Visions, Fabian has worked closely with his credentialed teacher and counselor to make sure he has the guidance and support needed to succeed. When describing his relationship with Visions staff, he explained they have been, “supportive and patient with me. They have really helped me to adapt to the new schoolwork flow.”

“Fabian is an absolutely delightful young man,” shared his credentialed teacher, Deanna Ponseti. “His work ethic impresses me so much and it’s been awesome to see him excel in our setting.

Turning a Passion for Cars Into a Future

Outside of school, Fabian spends much of his time working on cars and construction projects alongside his stepdad and uncle.

His stepdad, a mechanic, has helped introduce Fabian to the automotive industry and taught him many of the skills he continues to build today. “He is the one who taught me how to drive,” Fabian explained. “He is also the one that has taught me a lot of things that I have learned about cars.”

Fabian’s mom says his passion for cars reminds her of his childhood interest in LEGOs. Just as he once enjoyed putting individual pieces together to create something new, Fabian now enjoys understanding how the different parts of a vehicle work together.

At any given time, Fabian can be found working on multiple cars at once, applying the same curiosity and work ethic he brings to his education.

“Every day I continue to learn more and more.”

Looking ahead, Fabian hopes to turn his passion into a career in the automotive industry. Whether he eventually opens his own mechanic shop or works as a mechanic for a larger company, he is excited to continue learning, building his skills and pursuing a future doing what he loves.
