Student Spotlight: Finding Space to Learn, Create, and Grow

When it was time for Diana C. to enter her junior year, she decided she was ready for a change.

She chose Visions Independent Study Academy because she was looking for a different school experience—one where she could study and complete assignments on her own time.

“Visions was an amazing change for me.”

After a successful first year as a Visionary, Diana has entered her senior year with confidence and excitement for what comes next. Along the way, she has developed important time-management skills, built a strong connection with her credentialed teacher, and discovered new opportunities to explore her interests.

Finding a Learning Environment That Works

After her first full year as a Visionary, one of Diana’s favorite parts of her Visions experience has been the flexibility to complete assignments when it works best for her. Having greater control over her schedule has helped her stay productive while balancing her academic responsibilities with the activities she enjoys.

She has also appreciated the support of her credentialed teachers, who have been kind and understanding as she transitioned from the traditional public school environment.

“I really like my teacher because he is understanding and gives us time to do our assignments,” she explained. “He helps and talks to us individually to make sure we are on track with everything. He also gives opportunities like my flipbook assignment.”

That support opened the door for Diana to take on a creative academic challenge. To highlight her skills, her teacher encouraged her to participate in the Haiku Flipbook Competition last year.

Turning Creativity Into Achievement

For the competition, Diana created a flipbook inspired by a haiku and combined her academic work with her passion for art.

“The Haiku that I chose was (Arise from sleep, old cat, And with great yawns and stretchings… Amble out for love) by Issa. It is about an old cat who wakes up and looks for love.”

The opportunity allowed Diana to bring together poetry lessons and her love of drawing, painting, and mixed media. Her creativity and effort ultimately earned her first place in the competition, with her teacher describing her work as truly “awesome work.”

For Diana, the experience is one example of how being a Visions student has given her more opportunities to pursue the things she enjoys.

“Being able to work with my schedule gave me that opportunity,” she explained.

Looking Ahead

Now in her senior year, Diana is looking ahead to life after high school. She plans to pursue higher education and hopes to enter the medical field.

Reflecting on her experience at Visions, Diana encourages other students who may be looking for a different approach to their education to consider the opportunities that come with a more flexible learning environment.

“I would definitely recommend Visions because you can make your own schedule and work with very understanding teachers.”
