College Ready, Today: Bridge to College Students Kick Off the Fall Program

Last week, Visions Student Services team and Bridge to College partners welcomed students to an in-person kick-off event to build connections and prepare for the start of the fall Bridge to College program.

More than 150 students expressed interest in participating in the fall program, with more than 60 students confirming their participation and selecting their weekly session time.

Before beginning their eight-week virtual fall session, students had the opportunity to come together in person, meet the people who will support them throughout the program, and connect with fellow participants. The event was designed to help students feel prepared and connected as they take their next steps toward college.

Building Connections Before the Journey Begins

The kick-off event gave students the chance to learn more about what to expect from Bridge to College while creating a sense of community before virtual sessions begin.

Students met their mentors and counselors, asked questions about the program, and spent time getting to know one another over pizza. Bringing students together in person created an opportunity to build relationships that will continue throughout the fall session.

“Bridge to College helps students see themselves as college-bound while giving families the resources and support to navigate the journey together. When students and families feel supported and believe college is within reach, they can take meaningful steps toward making that goal a reality,” shared Mariah Ernst-Collins, Visions Counseling Manager.

Supporting First-Generation College Students

Bridge to College supports 10th, 11th, and 12th-grade students who are the first in their immediate family to pursue a college education, also known as first-generation college students.

For many first-generation students, navigating the path to higher education can bring questions about college enrollment, financial aid, academic preparedness, and what to expect from life after high school. Bridge to College provides students with guidance, resources, and support as they prepare to take that next step.

Preparing Students for What Comes Next

Bridge to College is a college-access program designed to support students as they explore and prepare for life after high school. Through weekly sessions, students receive guidance in college and career exploration, postsecondary planning, understanding life on campus, and developing the skills and confidence needed to pursue their goals after graduation.

With their kick-off complete, students are ready to begin their eight-week virtual fall session and continue building the knowledge, connections, and confidence they need to take their next steps toward college and their future.
