Graduate Spotlight: Visions Athlete Signs Letter of Intent with UC Davis

When Aurelio G. began his soccer journey, he carried with him a clear vision: to one day compete at the highest level. Turning that dream into reality required not only athletic dedication, but also a commitment to building a life that supported his goals both on and off the pitch.

Aurelio has officially signed his Letter of Intent to continue his academic and athletic career at the University of California, Davis, where he will play under head coach Dwayne Shaffer.

When asked about the inspiration behind his drive, Aurelio’s answer spoke volumes about the people who shaped his journey. “My family has been my biggest inspiration, especially through the challenges. My teachers at Visions and professors at American River College, alongside coaches and teammates, have also pushed me to keep improving and believe in myself, even during difficult moments.”

During the 2025 season, Aurelio competed with the Sacramento Republic FC Academy, taking on the challenge of larger competitions where exposure to college scouts would be greatest. Throughout this time, he remained enrolled full-time through Visions In Education’s Independent Study Academy, maintaining above a 4.0 GPA.

I chose Visions because it gave me the flexibility to fully pursue my goals as a high-level soccer player while still maintaining a strong academic focus. It allowed me to train, travel, and compete at an elite level without sacrificing my education,” said Aurelio.

The flexibility of independent study proved essential to managing the demands of elite athletics and academics. Aurelio’s mother reflected on how the program made a difference: “It did help him manage his priorities and time. He was able to train and learn, studying late at night to complete his assignments. His teachers, coaches, and teammates helped him see challenges as opportunities to improve.”

Looking ahead, Aurelio is eager for what comes next. “I’m most excited about competing at the next level, developing as a player and person, and being part of a team environment that pushes me every day. I’m also excited to grow academically and prepare for my future career.”

Overcoming Adversity

Despite the long journey and the setbacks that come with training and making a team, Aurgelio spoke to the mindset needed in order to be successful while also focusing on school work. He spoke candidly about one of the defining moments that shaped his resilience: “One of the biggest moments was overcoming adversity when I wasn’t getting playing time. Instead of giving up, I trained on my own, stayed consistent, and kept improving. That period built my resilience and ultimately helped me reach this opportunity.”

His consistency in both training and academics became the foundation that allowed him to rise to the occasion when it mattered most.

A Strong Support System

Behind every student-athlete is a network of people who refuse to let them quit. For Aurelio, that network included family, teachers, coaches, and peers who consistently pushed him toward his potential.

Aurelio’s credentialed teacher, Suzy Nuñez-Babb, shared that she is proud of him and what he has been able to accomplish while at Visions, “I feel so lucky to have gotten to be Aurelio’s teacher over the last three years. Not only is he a brilliant student, but he is an incredibly skilled athlete. Most importantly, Aurelio is a kind and caring person, always adding a bright smile to our conversations. UC Davis is truly lucky to have him!”

As Aurelio prepares for his next chapter of his journey, School Counselor Julie Winaski spoke of his determination to take advantage of the flexibility and resources that Visions offers.

“Working with Aurelio has truly been a joy. He always comes to our meetings prepared, focused, and ready with thoughtful questions that show how much he cares about his future.” Winalski said. “He’s ambitious and talented, but what really stands out is the way he approaches challenges, with a practical, steady optimism. Aurelio shows genuine care for his family and classmates, and he has put in so much hard work to reach this next step toward college. I have no doubt he’ll continue to thrive at the university level, and I’m excited to see all the great things ahead for him.”

Aurelio’s early commitment to UC Davis is a testament to the hard work, perseverance, and character he has demonstrated throughout his time with us. We are proud to have played a role in your journey, and we wish you every success in the next chapter ahead.
