As we eagerly approach the start of the 2026–27 school year, Visions staff and teachers—both new and returning—are preparing in a variety of ways through training, professional development, and personal growth. Together, these efforts ensure we are ready to serve our students and families with excellence when they return later this month.
For many new staff members, that journey began at our annual Welcome to Visions event, where they gathered to learn more about our organization, build connections with one another, and prepare for the year ahead.
Leading much of that experience was Lead Empowerment Facilitator Armoni Easley, who introduced staff to the LifeWork Experience by challenging them to reflect, grow, and embrace the impact they will have on students throughout the coming year.
Armoni was joined by Junior Empowerment Facilitators and Visions students Maribella K. (Grade 11, University Prep), Zarielle F. (Grade 11, Independent Study), and Axel P. (Grade 11, University Prep), who brought the student perspective to life throughout the session.
To kick off the experience, the Junior Empowerment Facilitators introduced themselves to more than 150 staff members before leading an Empowerment Panel.
During the panel, each student reflected on their journey at Visions, sharing meaningful experiences, what helps them feel seen and supported, the qualities that build trust with adults, and what they hope every new staff member understands about serving students.
For many staff members, this was their very first opportunity to hear directly from Visionaries. Listening to students openly share what has helped them thrive at Visions offered a powerful reminder that meaningful relationships are at the heart of every student’s success.
“I never really understood school, I failed 7th and 8th grade - it was a bad part of my life. But coming to Visions, and getting an A on a test and my teacher saying ‘you worked hard, good job.’ All of the words of encouragement you guys say, it really affects kids.”
“Visions is so strong and I’m so proud of everything they’ve accomplished. I’ve been here on and off since Kindergarten and I always come back to Visions and there’s a reason I’m still here…Visions gave my parents the flexibility and the power to raise me as they saw fit, and because of that I’m the person that I am. If every staff member could realize the power they have, I think it would be so awesome.”
“You have a 110% impact on these students. Everything you say, introduce to them, they’re going to remember. You are the empowerment and the light into their lives…You are the shepherds of their education, growth, and knowledge, and your words have power.”
“You are the most important project you will ever work on.”
Following the empowerment panel, Armoni shifted the focus back to Visions’ newest staff members, emphasizing that in order to create the positive experiences students had just described, educators must first invest in themselves.
Throughout this portion of the session, staff brainstormed free and accessible self-care activities before being challenged to intentionally complete at least one during the following week, reinforcing the importance of prioritizing their own well-being.
“You have to be good, for Visions to be good,” Armoni explained.
At Visions, we strive to become 1% better every day. During his presentation, Armoni encouraged staff to extend that commitment beyond their professional roles and into their personal lives, recognizing that the work they do on themselves ultimately influences every interaction they have with students, colleagues, and families.
As the presentation came to a close, staff reflected on what they were most excited about for the upcoming school year.
They also shared how the day shaped their thinking (LifeWork), what resonated most deeply with them (HeartWork), and one action they planned to take moving forward (LegacyWork).
Throughout these reflections, one theme consistently emerged: the lasting impact of meaningful relationships between students and educators.
That message became even more powerful through an unexpected reunion.
After spending 20 years teaching in a traditional school setting, new Visions Independent Study credentialed teacher Kimiko Walker arrived at the event feeling emotional as she prepared to begin a new chapter in her career. Those emotions quickly shifted when Armoni Easley stepped to the front of the room.
Years earlier, Armoni had been one of Kimiko’s very first students.
What began as a day filled with uncertainty became an unforgettable reminder of the lasting impact educators have on their students. Seeing a former student now leading more than 150 educators through a session focused on empowerment and personal growth inspired not only Kimiko, but everyone in attendance.
Their reunion became one of the most meaningful moments of the day, serving as a powerful reminder that the relationships built between students and teachers can have an impact that lasts far beyond the classroom.
