Growing up in the country, William wanted an educational experience that better aligned with his personal goals, interests, and lifestyle than traditional public schooling could offer.
During the pandemic, he had the opportunity to try hybrid learning, which inspired him to explore homeschooling. In seventh grade, he enrolled in Visions’ Home School Academy, beginning a journey that would help him balance academics with his many passions.
Five years later, William is a thriving senior in Visions’ Independent Study Academy. He continues to excel academically while staying actively involved in the clubs, events, and extracurricular activities that make his high school experience uniquely his own.
“There are so many things I love about being a student at Visions.”
Throughout his years at Visions, one of William’s favorite aspects has been the flexibility to complete his schoolwork on a schedule that works for him. Between attending 4-H and Visions events, helping his family, and pursuing other extracurricular activities, having the freedom to manage his time has been key to his success.
The relationships he has built with his teachers and counselor have also played an important role in his educational journey. “My relationship with my teachers and counselor has been fantastic. I’ve never had a bad experience with any of the faculty here at this school.”
His credentialed teacher, Mary Johnston, has helped him stay organized and understand what he needs to accomplish to remain on track academically. “William is an amazing student, high achiever, incredibly involved in school events and clubs, one of the kindest people one could meet,” shared Ms. Johnston.
As William approaches graduation, his counselor, Kiely Anderson, has also been an invaluable source of guidance, helping him navigate the steps ahead. “She’s been super helpful in knowing where I need to go, how to do it, and when I complete it.”
William’s involvement at Visions extends well beyond the classroom. Through the school’s Video Game Design Career Technical Education (CTE) Pathway, he has developed his interests while taking on leadership responsibilities. Now a second-year ambassador, he mentors first-year students in the program and helps them navigate their own experiences. Last year, he also had the opportunity to represent Visions and CTE at the Educating for Careers Conference.
“From being a CTE student to being a CTE 2nd year Ambassador has been an amazing experience, especially to be a part of that kind of community, and I couldn’t have done it without my CTE teacher, Kimberly Grant.”
His creative interests have also found a home in other areas of the Visions community. William currently serves as the design lead for the school newspaper, The Visions Quarterly, and is an active member of other student clubs including GSA Club, Music Creators Club, and more.
He also makes an effort to attend as many Visions events as possible, with roller skating, CPR/BLS certifications, and CTE-related events among his favorites.
“I’ve gotten the chance to meet many of my friends at these events as well as hang out with old ones.”
For William, these opportunities have made it possible to build meaningful connections and make the most of his high school experience while learning independently.
Outside of school, William enjoys staying active at the gym, creating and playing music, and reading. He is also deeply involved in 4-H, where he currently serves as a CA 4-H State Ambassador.
Balancing these interests alongside his education has been an important part of his experience at Visions. The flexibility to pursue his passions while keeping up with his schoolwork has allowed him to make time for the activities that matter most to him.
“Being able to have time freed up for each of my hobbies and passions is important to taking care of yourself with the things you enjoy. And Visions has been able to give me that opportunity for self-care.”
As graduation approaches, William is looking ahead to his next chapter. He plans to attend community college before transferring to a four-year university and is exploring a potential career in audio engineering, combining his interests in music and creativity.
Through five years at Visions, William has found an educational path that supports his academic goals, encourages his interests, and gives him the flexibility to explore new opportunities.
As he prepares to graduate, William is grateful for the experiences, relationships, and opportunities he has gained throughout his time at Visions. He hopes to continue connecting with the community at future events.
