Working at Visions: What Makes Us Different

Working at Visions: What Makes Us Different

At Visions In Education, every member of our team is aligned with our mission and driven by a belief in continuous growth for ourselves, for one another, and especially for the students we serve. We strive to get 1% better each day, knowing that small intentional improvements lead to meaningful impact.

That commitment to students begins with how we treat and support our staff. “I feel valued and seen here,” shares Christie Benavides, Business Analyst. At Visions, individuals are encouraged to bring their strengths, ideas, and perspectives to the table. This creates an environment where collaboration and innovation thrive.

As teacher Leslie Storz explains “nobody flies alone at Visions.”

Teamwork is woven into everything we do, from how staff support one another to how students are supported on their learning journey. By working together, sharing expertise, and lifting each other up, we create a culture where both educators and students can succeed.

Celebrating Our Partnerships

Visions In Education is proud to be deeply connected to the communities we serve. By partnering with organizations that align with our values, we’re able to expand opportunities for our students while giving back in meaningful ways. Whether it’s collaborating with U.C. Davis to support college mentorship or joining Street Soccer U.S.A.’s annual cups to advocate for homeless populations across California, these partnerships reflect our shared passion for service and education.

To showcase our partnerships, we’ve introduced a new page dedicated to highlighting our growing network of partners and the meaningful work our teachers and staff are doing alongside them. See our page for more info and check out some of the things Visions has done in our communities.

LPAD Student Support System: Students+Technology = Success

Serving more than 8,000 students in a service area bigger than New Jersey isn’t easy, but thanks to Visions’ LPAD Student Support System, families and staff have all the tools they need to help their students succeed.

From ordering curriculum to sending and receiving communications to managing student information, LPAD allows Visions to serve our students quicker, faster, and in a more cost effective way. Developed by Visions internal programmers, LPAD is a system that can adapt and meet our school’s rapidly changing needs with new features and quality-of-life enhancements developed in-house.

“Building LPAD from the ground up was rewarding and complex,” says Technology Services Manager and longtime LPAD developer Michael Miller. “We weren’t just creating a piece of software—we were designing a digital backbone for the entire organization. Our goal was to connect every department, every vendor, and every student through one secure, seamless platform.”

Student Spotlight: Where Perseverance and Language Meet

Student Spotlight: Where Perseverance and Language Meet

When Diana A. enrolled in Visions’ University Prep Early College Academy her junior year, she was looking for more than just a new school – she was looking for a challenge. She wanted the opportunity to explore topics that truly interested her, embrace independent learning, and grow both academically and personally.

“I joined Visions because I saw it as a great opportunity to explore an independent study program, where I could challenge myself and deepen my knowledge on topics that I truly care about,” Diana shared.

Since enrolling, she has done exactly that. Most recently, Diana celebrated the accomplishment of earning her California State Seal of Biliteracy.

The Power of Biliteracy

In the fall of 2025, Diana was recognized as one of Visions’ student honorees who earned the State Seal of Biliteracy, an award that acknowledges graduating seniors who demonstrate proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing in English and one or more additional languages. The seal not only celebrates proficiency in multiple languages, but also opens up doors to meaningful college and career opportunities.

Diana grew up speaking both Russian and English. For much of her life, being bilingual simply felt normal. “I never realized that being bilingual was a big asset, but now that it has been recognized, it feels more meaningful,” she shared. “Now I see the positive weight it holds and how much of a gift it truly is.”

For Diana, the seal represents more than academic achievement.

“This seal serves as a reminder for myself that language is much more than just words; it opens up roads to different cultures, perspectives and opportunities.

By earning her Seal of Biliteracy, Diana not only honored her heritage, but also strengthened her foundation for future academic and professional pursuits.

Finding Strength in Support

While Diana initially chose Visions for the independence that comes with self-guided learning, what has stood out most to her has been the unwavering support she has received. As a student taking college-level courses while still in high school, Diana has leaned on the encouragement and guidance of her mentors. “The confidence and guidance I receive from different mentors prepares me for anything that could come my way,” she said.

She especially values the relationships she has built with her counselors and teachers. “The relationships I have with my counselors and teachers here at Visions are exceptional. They go beyond academic support, foster an environment that is understanding, and offer a genuine level of care. Their dedication is out of this world.

Beyond academics, Diana has also been supported in exploring her personal interests and future goals. She is an active member of the Success Through Education Mentoring (STEM) Program at Visions, which has helped her learn more about college pathways and opportunities.

“This club is really helpful in finding out more about the topic of colleges/universities,” she explained. “It’s truly a great opportunity.”

Outside of her coursework and student involvement, Diana enjoys expressing her creativity. She spends time crocheting, painting, making her own soap, and even organizing parties and baby showers. She balances her creative hobbies with staying active through daily walks and workouts at the gym, a reflection of her well-rounded approach to life.

Diana also enjoys expressing her creativity through baking, see the cake she baked for her birthday featured above!

Looking Ahead

Through her dedication and willingness to challenge herself, Diana has built a strong foundation for the future. From earning her State Seal of Biliteracy to taking college-level courses and participating in student clubs, she has fully embraced the opportunities available to her at Visions.

After graduation, she plans to pursue higher education right away and is eagerly awaiting college decisions as she prepares to take her next step.

When asked what advice she would give to students considering Visions, Diana said, “Visions is an amazing place if you are someone who loves to explore your passions, dive into things you’re genuinely interested in, and would like to take your education in your own hands.”

And for students thinking about earning their Seal of Biliteracy?

“Just go for it! The Seal of Biliteracy is truly an achievement that you can be proud of, so why not take a chance?”

Through hard work, curiosity, and the courage to challenge herself, Diana has shown that when students take ownership of their education, the possibilities are limitless.

Building Meaningful Connections at Visions In Education

Building Meaningful Connections at Visions In Education

Here at Visions, we know that learning is not one size fits all. Every child learns differently, which is why at Visions each child learns at a pace that works for them by working with their teacher to develop a learning plan that will support them to be successful.

“The best part of teaching at Visions for me is absolutely getting way more one on one time with the kids,” shares teacher Erin Butler.

That time makes all the difference. Visions teachers intentionally invest in getting to know each student: how they learn, what motivates them, and what support they need to thrive.

Partnered with families, teachers are able to help create learning plans where students feel seen, heard, and supported.

Thank you to the staff and administrators that participated in this video series. We’ll be sharing more videos of our Visionaries on our website, so stay tuned!

Student Spotlight: Shining in a New Chapter

Student Spotlight: Shining in a New Chapter

For many students, coming to Visions marks the beginning of a new chapter, where learning finally fits their unique needs. After struggling with the structure of a traditional school schedule due to anxiety and other health challenges, Madilynn V. enrolled in Visions’ Independent Study Academy this year as a junior in search of balance and support.

Since making the transition, she has blossomed as a student, gaining confidence by learning at a pace that works for her, building a strong sense of community through student activities she is passionate about, and finding the time and space to explore her interests beyond the virtual classroom.

Cultivating Community

One of my favorite parts of being a student at Visions is the community,” Madilynn shared. After enrolling at Visions, she jumped right into the extracurricular opportunities that Visions offers, and is an active member of the Student Newspaper Club, Debate Club, and Student Council. She enjoys being part of each of these clubs for different reasons, but with a similar thread: creating connections with other students.

“Visions being an online school, you would think people would be isolated or antisocial, but I feel that I have made good relationships with my peers through the clubs provided at Visions,” she shared.

Through writing for the Visions Quarterly as part of the Newspaper Club, Madilynn has been able to express her creativity by writing about topics that interest her and creating collages to support her work. She has also formed friendships with like-minded peers, strengthening her sense of belonging within the school community.

Her involvement in both Debate Club and Student Council have given her the opportunity to use her voice and stay informed about what is happening at Visions and in the world around her. Madilynn enjoys hearing different perspectives from fellow students, which has helped her broaden her thinking and better understand how others view the world.

Along with these student connections, Madilynn has developed a closer relationship with her credentialed teacher at Visions than she was able to in a traditional school setting. “Mrs. Ponseti is amazing at giving helpful feedback on my assignments and even on my columns for the newspaper,” she shared. “She is so helpful, approachable, and caring to her students”

“Madilynn is an incredible student, artist, and writer,” shared her teacher, Mrs. Ponseti. “She is lovely to meet with and I always enjoy seeing her artwork and reading her writing whether it be for classwork, Newspaper, or Find Your Voice.”

Creating Connections through Reading

Outside of school, Madilynn is a dedicated reader whose love for books began during the pandemic and has grown into a thriving community. What started as a personal hobby has expanded into attending book signings, connecting with other readers and writers through social media, and participating in book clubs.

Madilynn currently runs several social media accounts where she shares book reviews and highlights book-related events she attends. Her passion has even led to receiving books from publishers to review on her platforms, an exciting step as she continues to grow her online community.

She has also found ways to connect her love of reading back to Visions. “I was able to host a book club with other Visions students, making more relationships with like-minded people my age,” she shared.

Building a Strong Foundation

In addition to her involvement in student clubs, Madilynn is currently working on her driver’s permit through a Visions enrichment vendor, and has been able to get CPR certified through a Visions event as well.

Between her coursework, extracurricular activities, and strong relationship with Visions staff, Madilynn is building a steady foundation as a student while preparing for a successful future. Beyond high school, she hopes to explore a career in writing or literature, politics and advocacy, or maybe even combine her passions in the field of journalism.

For now, she encourages other students to get involved just as she has – by asking questions, joining clubs, and speaking up in Zoom meetings. Students like Madilynn are a shining example of what it means to make the most of your education, showing that curiosity, confidence, and active participation can turn any learning experience into something meaningful.

Celebrating CTE Awareness Month

Celebrating CTE Awareness Month

Career Technical Education (CTE) programs give high school students hands-on learning experiences in real-world career fields like healthcare, construction, IT, and more! These programs equip students with valuable skills, industry certifications, and even college credits—helping them jumpstart their future while still in school. Whether heading straight into the workforce or continuing their education, CTE empowers students with the confidence and experience they need to succeed.

Visions is proud to offer three distinct CTE pathways, Medical Careers, Game & Simulation and Cybersecurity, that allow our students to build real-world skills before graduating and connect with valuable work-study opportunities.  We are also very excited to be piloting an Artificial Intelligence course and an Introduction to Construction course that includes hands-on in-person learning, VR simulations all led by a credentialed construction teacher.

This February, let’s recognize the power of CTE in shaping bright futures! 🚀 #CTEMonth #SkillsForSuccess

Grad Spotlight: A Mother and Daughter’s Full-Circle Visions Journey

Grad Spotlight: A Mother and Daughter’s Full-Circle Visions Journey

For many families, Visions In Education is more than a school. Visions is a place where paths are reshaped and futures are built. For Sarina S. and her mother, MacKenzie, Visions represents a shared journey that spans across two generations and comes together at graduation in February of 2026.

Finding the Right Fit

Sarina enrolled in Visions’ Independent Study Academy as a sophomore after realizing that a traditional public school setting was not meeting her needs. Health challenges and the fast pace of a conventional classroom made it difficult for her to keep up academically, and she struggled to find success despite her efforts.

At Visions, Sarina found something different: flexibility, understanding, and support. With a personalized learning approach, she was able to work at a pace that made sense for her. This month, Sarina will take the stage at our Fall Graduation Ceremony, celebrating a milestone that once felt out of reach.

From the beginning, Sarina built strong relationships with her counselor and her Special Education teacher who supported her every step of the way. Together, they created a learning plan tailored to her needs and goals. That personalized experience became one of Sarina’s favorite parts of being a Visions student.

Exploring Passions and Building Confidence

Beyond academics, Visions gave Sarina the chance to explore her interests and connect with others. She participated in a student club, completed Directed Projects, and attended Visions events that helped her feel part of a community. Sarina also participated in online and behind the wheel driver’s education through one of Vision’s enrichment vendors

Outside of school, Sarina enjoys creative outlets like making art and playing video games, especially Minecraft and Overwatch. She joined the Minecraft Club, where she met a new friend during her sophomore year, and took art classes through an enrichment vendor, allowing her to grow her creativity alongside her academics. That creativity also shows up in her love for Star Wars. She is a self-described fanatic and hopes to one day join the international fan organization “501st,” known for designing and building screen-accurate costumes.

Earlier this year, Sarina attended Visions’ first-ever Senior Sunrise, where she made a new friend and later participated in the College and Career Fair. It was there that she decided she’d like to graduate early to attend American River College, where she hopes to further explore digital art and career paths connected to her passion.

From Visions Student to Visions Parent

As Sarina prepares to graduate, her mom MacKenzie reflects on her own Visions journey. MacKenzie enrolled in Visions as a sophomore in the early 2000s, at a time when she had to grow up quickly but was determined to earn her diploma.

“Visions allowed me to complete my school work while still having an active life,” she shared. One of the most impactful parts of her experience was her relationship with her credentialed teacher, Lonny Gosset.

“I honestly think if I hadn’t had him, I wouldn’t have finished high school,” MacKenzie said. Her teacher met her where she was, supported her through challenges, and helped her cross the finish line.

Now, two decades later, MacKenzie gets to watch her daughter experience that same care and support. “It’s bittersweet. I never thought I would have a child that could go to Visions. Watching her show up and now graduate has been amazing,” she shared.

[Visions] has been amazing. The Special Education department is wonderful, they helped my daughter tremendously … more than any other school.”

Looking Ahead

This month, Visions looks forward to celebrating with Sarina and MacKenzie during this powerful full-circle moment: both mother and daughter standing as Visions graduates, twenty years apart. Together, their shared experience stands as a testament to how personalized learning and meaningful relationships can help shape not just one student’s future, but an entire family’s story.

We would also like to thank 3 family members who have supported Sarina through her education journey. My husband’s wonderful mother/Nana Naomi, my husband’s aunt/Sarina’s godmother and an exceptional IEP supporter Victoria, and our fabulous Aunt Shelia for the talks about schools and academics. This was also encouraged and in memory of MacKenzie’s dad/Sarina’s grandpa Eugene Selwyn Tyson. Daddy/Grandpa, Miss Hollywood DID IT!!”

Taking the Stage: A Night of Visions Student Performances

Celebrating a night dedicated to the arts! On Friday, January 16, Visions students, families, and staff gathered at the Clara Center Auditorium in Sacramento for a vibrant evening celebrating creativity and student talent. The event showcased performances from students across all grade levels, filling the theater with music, storytelling, and joyful expression.

The evening opened with a recorder performance by 3rd-6th grade students who have been working with Home School Academy teacher Erika Baker. Their musical introduction set the tone for the elementary double feature that followed. TK-2nd grade students delighted the audience with a fairy tale mash-up titled Once Upon a Playdate, while 3rd-6th grade performers took the stage next with Once Upon a Mix-Up.

As the evening continued, 7th-12th grade students brought their talents to the spotlight. Middle school performers kicked off the secondary showcase with scenes, monologues, and improv, followed by high school students who delivered their own compelling performances. The night also featured group and solo musical numbers led by Independent Study Academy teacher Katie Elson. Up next, these talented high school performers will take their skills beyond the Visions stage as they participate in the Lenaea Theater Festival on February 6.

A huge thank you to Chad Fisk, Pritika Sharma, Erika Baker, Katie Elson, Nicole Roberts, Crystal Linnet and all Visions families and staff who helped make this memorable evening possible.

Student Spotlight: Forging the Path to Success

Student Spotlight: Forging the Path to Success

Education is not one-size-fits-all. For many students, the traditional school schedule can make it difficult to thrive. That was the case for Rin W., who enrolled in the Visions Independent Study Academy as a senior after struggling to keep up in a traditional high school setting. By finding a learning pace that worked for her and partnering closely with her teacher, Rin has grown into the successful student she always knew she could be.

“Visions helped me get out of a dark place in my life where I felt I couldn’t show up to school, and my friends weren’t the best influence,” Rin shared. “But since I got out of that environment and joined Visions, life has been so much easier for me. I have made amazing new friends from one of my classes who support and help me make good decisions, and help me with homework sometimes. My grades have been better than ever.

Support That Makes a Difference

Enrolling at Visions helped re-ignite Rin’s confidence in herself as a learner. With consistent support from her teacher and a new community of encouraging classmates, Rin has maintained perfect attendance and continues to meet her academic goals. Her credentialed teacher, Lisa Rainbolt, praised Rin’s dedication, sharing that “she has worked very hard on her classes.”

Rin has also developed strong time-management skills, a key factor in her success. “What helps me manage my time so well is knowing I can work at my own pace,” she explained. She also credits much of her progress to the strong relationship she has built with her teacher. “My relationship with my teacher is amazing; she is one of the sweetest and my favorite teachers I have had in my whole high school experience. I love knowing that I can text her at any time and she will be there to help me or answer any questions I have, school-wise or just in general.”

Outside of academics, Rin enjoys designing, painting, and working on art projects. Visions has allowed her to balance her schoolwork while still making time to explore her creativity. Looking ahead, Rin hopes to continue her education and is considering a future career as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or firefighter.

“Before Visions, I was a D student at best,” Rin shared. “But now, I have absolutely mind-blowing grades, and I am so grateful to my teachers and counselor for helping me achieve the goals I set for myself when joining Visions.”

Rin’s journey is a powerful reminder that when students are given the right support, flexibility, and encouragement, they can rebuild confidence, rediscover their strengths, and create a path toward a successful future.
