It’s Good to Be Visions: Staff Development & BBQ – May 2026

It’s Good to Be Visions: Staff Development & BBQ - May 2026

Earlier this week, more than 600 Visions staff members and teachers gathered at the Harris Center for the Arts at Folsom Lake College for our annual end-of-year staff development day. The event provided a special opportunity for staff to come together to reflect on the accomplishments of the school year, celebrate one another, and look ahead with excitement toward the future.

To kick off the morning program, Superintendent Dr. Steve Olmos welcomed staff with words of gratitude and appreciation for the incredible work accomplished throughout the year. He shared special thanks for the teachers and families who welcomed him into their homes and learning spaces during visits across the school year.

“Thank you to all of our incredible teachers and staff members for all that you do to touch the lives of our students and families. Your work and dedication truly makes a difference,” shared Dr. Olmos.

Dr. Olmos then welcomed two of our Distinguished Alumni from Visions’ inaugural Alumni Hall of Fame, Jessica Chavez and Brian Abrigana, to the stage. The audience celebrated the alumni honorees as they reflected on what the recognition meant to them and shared how Visions impacted their educational journeys.

Staff Celebrations

The celebration continued as Director of Human Resources Donna Glenn recognized the people who make the Visions community so special. She welcomed new staff members, honored retirees, celebrated the 2025–26 All Stars, and highlighted our “Future Visionaries.”

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our retirees for the lasting impact they have made on students, families, and the organization throughout their careers. Congratulations to our All Stars for the meaningful difference they make each day, and congratulations to all staff members who welcomed a new addition to their families this year.

Celebrating Our Students

As the celebration continued, the focus shifted to the heart of everything we do: our students.

May is an especially exciting time at Visions as students are recognized through a variety of promotion and graduation ceremonies. Vasa Lokteff, Home School Director of Instruction, shared details about our kindergarten and eighth grade promotion ceremonies. These events provide meaningful opportunities for students, families, teachers, and staff to celebrate academic growth and honor students as they prepare for the next chapter of their educational journeys.

Director of Student Services Matt Patterson then provided an update on high school graduation preparations. This June, Visions will celebrate a record-breaking graduating class of more than 1,500 Visionaries during three ceremonies at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium. Matt highlighted the many ways staff across the organization are working together to support graduates in the weeks leading up to commencement, including grad checkouts and other celebratory activities.

Matt also welcomed the recipients of the 2026 Steve Phelps American Dream Scholarship to the stage: Dulce Valdez Nava and Ariana Angel. Congratulations to both students on this well-deserved honor.

To conclude the morning program, Dr. Olmos shared Visions’ annual “1% Better” video — a powerful reflection on the many ways staff have continued striving for growth and improvement in service to students and families throughout the year. The video celebrated the collective effort behind creating an even better experience for the Visions community and highlighted why “It’s Good to Be Visions.”

Cooking Up Some Fun: Staff BBQ

Following the morning program, staff gathered at the Visions office in Gold River to continue the celebration together.

Staff enjoyed a catered BBQ lunch, friendly games of cornhole, and music provided by Visions employee Raeshonn Minnifield, who kept the energy high with his DJ talents.

Throughout the afternoon, staff also captured memories in a photo booth provided by Director of Technology Uriel Gonzalez and hosted by the Marketing and Communications team.

Special thanks to all staff members who helped make this day possible, including Facilities, Human Resources, Marketing and Communications, Raeshonn Minnifield, and Assistant to the Superintendent Betty Brady.

1% Better - Student Spotlights Recap 2025-26

At Visions, students are not just part of what we do, they are the reason we exist. Every program, every initiative, and every connection we build is rooted in a single purpose: helping each student discover their potential and achieve meaningful success. And when they do, we celebrate—because their victories are what define us.

Our Student Spotlight program shines a light on the journeys of students and families who have carved their own paths while at Visions—stories of growth, resilience, and achievement. These stories not only honor accomplishments across all our academies, but also highlight the powerful relationships between students and staff, and the transformative impact of the programs that support them.

Throughout the 2025-26 school year, we have proudly shared 38 student and graduate success stories. We also celebrated a milestone moment with the launch of our inaugural Alumni Hall of Fame, recognizing an extraordinary group of Visions graduates whose achievements continue to inspire our community.

Grad Spotlight: Turning Opportunities Into Achievement

Grad Spotlight: Turning Opportunities Into Achievement

Two years ago, Daniel H. enrolled in Visions’ University Prep Early College Academy with a clear goal in mind: to take ownership of his education and get ahead through dual enrollment opportunities.

What he discovered was much more than an academic advantage.

As he prepares to walk across the stage at graduation this June, Daniel is reflecting on a high school journey filled with leadership, connection, and personal growth.

Finding More Than Just Academics

While Daniel has appreciated the opportunity to earn college credits and prepare for higher education, his favorite part of Visions has been the chance to grow beyond the classroom through leadership opportunities, school events, and enrichment programs.

Through enrichment vendors, Daniel explored a wide range of interests including sports, swimming, and music lessons. These experiences helped him build confidence, develop new skills, and stay connected to the activities he enjoys most.

From the moment he joined Visions, Daniel made it a priority to get involved. By participating in clubs and building relationships with students and staff, he found a strong sense of community while stepping into several leadership roles. Throughout high school, Daniel served as an ambassador for the Success Through Education Mentoring (STEM) Programpresident of the Future Business Leaders Club, and a Student Council representative.

One of the defining moments of his high school experience was competing at the Junior Achievement National Leadership Conference in Atlanta. After leading his team to a second-place finish at the Junior Achievement Regional Stock Market Challenge, they earned the opportunity to advance to the national competition.

The People Who Made an Impact

Along the way, the relationships Daniel built became one of the most meaningful parts of his journey. He especially credits his counselor, Mrs. Winalski, for the support and encouragement she provided throughout his time at Visions.

“She has been so supportive and instrumental throughout my time at Visions via all of our in person and virtual conversations. Her impact on my academic journey has truly been positively paramount,” Daniel shared.

Building Skills Beyond the Classroom

Outside of academics and school activities, Daniel enjoys playing sports, learning about financial literacy, scripting in Python, and editing videos and films to capture meaningful moments and celebrations.

His creativity even earned him recognition in the Visions community. Last year, Daniel received second place in the “Why I Love Visions” student video contest. Check out his submission below!

A Future Driven by Big Goals

As graduation approaches, Daniel’s hard work is already opening doors to exciting opportunities. During college decision season, he was accepted to several prestigious universities, including UCLA, UC San Diego, and UC Davis. He also received a Regents Scholarship from UC San Diego.

“This is a huge accomplishment that I am extremely blessed to have achieved, and do not take for granted,” Daniel shared.

As he looks ahead to college, Daniel plans to pursue a career in Data Science.

When asked what advice he would give to other Visions students, he encourages them to fully embrace the opportunities and support systems available to them. “Truly do as much as you can to take advantage of the built-in infrastructure to support your goals, aspirations, and educational experience. It will go a tremendously long way.”

Visions looks forward to celebrating Daniel and all of the accomplishments of the Class of 2026 this June. Congratulations, Daniel!

Student Spotlight: Learning, Leading, & Leveling Up

Student Spotlight: Learning, Leading, & Leveling Up

From a young age, Alisa M. had a clear sense of her interests and where she wanted to go. What she needed was the right environment to nurture those passions, strengthen her time management skills, and open doors to new opportunities.

In just two years at Visions, she has done exactly that—diving into a Career Technical Education (CTE) pathway, working with an enrichment vendor to sharpen her artistic talents, and building a personalized learning schedule that supports both her goals and her growth.

Now a junior in Visions’ Independent Study Academy, Alisa is not only thriving academically, but also giving back as a CTE Student Ambassador in the Game Design program—mentoring her peers while continuing to pursue excellence and balance in her own journey.

Powering Up: From Student to Ambassador

“Even before I came to Visions, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in technology or software,” Alisa shared.

Once she enrolled, stepping into the Game Design CTE pathway felt like a natural next move—but what she discovered went far beyond the basics of game design.

“I had so much more fun in this class than I could have imagined,” she said. “Not only did it deepen my knowledge of video game design, but it also opened my eyes to so many opportunities in technology and potential careers.

After completing her first year, Visions teacher Kim Grant encouraged Alisa to take on a new challenge: becoming a CTE Student Ambassador. In this role, she mentors first-year students in the program while building leadership skills alongside peers from other CTE pathways.

“I found it to be a remarkably rewarding and fun experience,” Alisa said. “Not only did I get to help other students, but I also reinforced what I learned in year one by answering questions and working through problems again.”

One of the most meaningful parts of her experience has been the sense of community among the ambassadors. “Each ambassador brings something different to the table, and we can all use our skills to support each other and the students,” she explained.

Beyond collaboration, it’s the connections she’s built with her mentees that stand out most. “It’s been a heartwarming experience getting to know each of them,” Alisa said. “Spending time together during our meetings truly brightens my day.”

Designing Her Own Path

One of Alisa’s favorite parts of being a student at Visions has been the ability to design a schedule that truly works for her. With the opportunity to personalize her learning, she’s strengthened her time management skills—making steady progress toward her academic goals while also carving out time for activities that support her personal and mental well-being.

That balance has made a meaningful difference, allowing her to stay focused, motivated, and in control of her learning journey.

Along the way, Alisa has also built strong, supportive relationships with her teachers. She regularly connects with them when she has questions or needs extra support, creating a learning environment where she feels confident and encouraged. “Going through school feels much easier knowing I can get help whenever I need it,” she shared.

Her teachers play a big role in making that experience positive. “My teachers always manage to make every class special and interesting in its own way, making learning engaging no matter what.”

Creative Mode Activated

Beyond building strong time management skills, Alisa has embraced the many opportunities Visions offers to explore her interests.

Last school year, she partnered with an enrichment vendor for art lessons—an experience that allowed her to grow both creatively and personally. “Not only did I learn a lot, but I also used my school-provided funds to expand my art skills and pursue something I was interested in,” she shared.

At the heart of it all is her love for creativity. “Mostly, my favorite hobbies are those that let me express my creativity,” Alisa said.

Whether it’s drawing, painting, or scrapbooking, Alisa enjoys bringing her ideas to life through art. She also expresses herself through singing, baking, and of course, video games. Outside of her creative pursuits, she stays active and balanced through weightlifting, hiking, traveling with her family, and reading.

Future Loading …

As Alisa looks ahead to her senior year at Visions, she’s already laying the groundwork for what comes next. Focused and driven, she’s taking advantage of every opportunity to get a head start on her future, including dual enrollment.

“I am slowly completing my general education requirements for community college, and by the end of my high school career, I will have completed about 1-1.5 years of college,” she shared.

After graduation, Alisa plans to finish her general education courses before transferring to a California State University, where she hopes to pursue a degree in Computer Science with a minor in Graphic Design. Along the way, she’s committed to continuing to build her skills and explore new opportunities within the technology field.

When offering advice to other students considering Visions, Alisa highlights two key ingredients for success: time management and asking for support when needed. “Visions has a great team ready and willing to help you succeed!” she said.

She also emphasizes the importance of taking ownership of your learning:

“Time and workload management is a crucial skill to have and continue to grow—not just in school, but in building a strong work ethic and opening up future opportunities,” Alisa explained. “Visions provides the tools, but you have to use them.

Student Spotlight: Building a Future in Medicine

Student Spotlight: Building a Future in Medicine

Seven years ago, Carlee C. enrolled at Visions—and she never looked back. Today, she is a senior in the University Prep Early College Academy, reflecting on her journey and the many accomplishments she has achieved along the way.

“I had struggled in public school socially, as well as not finding the academic material challenging enough. Visions has been such a huge part of my life since then,” she shared.

Since enrolling, Carlee has fully embraced the opportunities available to her. From serving as an ambassador in her Career Technical Education (CTE) pathway as she works toward her goal of becoming a doctor, to participating in clubs and student events, to pursuing her State Seal of Biliteracy in American Sign Language—her involvement has been both meaningful and impactful.

Her dedication has remained strong, even through personal challenges. While navigating multiple knee surgeries, Carlee stayed committed to her education, working closely with staff to continue progressing. “At Visions, I was supported by staff, and being able to work from home was crucial to my recovery,” she explained.

“I truly believe that without Visions, I would not have been able to accomplish all that I have.

Learning & Leading

Carlee has already begun laying the foundation for her future career. Through enrollment in Visions’ Medical Careers CTE pathway, she took an important first step toward her goal of becoming a doctor. “It was an amazing introduction to the medical field,” she shared.

Her involvement didn’t stop there. For the past two years, Carlee has served as a CTE Student Leadership Ambassador, gaining valuable leadership experience and building confidence along the way. “This has provided me with incredible leadership opportunities, which have overall helped with my confidence,” she said.

Most recently, Carlee represented Visions at the 2026 Educating for Careers Conference, where she joined fellow CTE Student Ambassadors in sharing the impact of leadership opportunities within CTE programs with educators from across California.

In addition to her CTE involvement, Carlee has taken advantage of dual and concurrent enrollment opportunities, allowing her to get a head start on college coursework.

“I have learned so much by taking college classes and getting a head start on college,” she said.

Through concurrent enrollment, she discovered a passion for American Sign Language (ASL). She is now completing testing to earn the California State Seal of Biliteracy in ASL—an achievement that will open doors for future academic and career opportunities.

Carlee has also explored her creative side and is now a published author through her participation in the Find Your Voice Writing Program.

Building Connections & Community

Beyond academics, Carlee has made it a priority to stay connected and involved in the Visions community through student clubs and events.

“The opportunities I’ve had here are invaluable,” she shared.

Her involvement spans a wide range of student activities, including American Sign Language Club and Newspaper Club. She is also an active member of the California Scholarship Federation (CSF) and participates in the Success Through Education Mentoring (STEM) Program.

Through these experiences, Carlee has gained not only academic enrichment, but also meaningful social connections and personal growth that will support her beyond high school.

“From dances to museums to college tours, Visions has an event for everybody,” she said. “I met some of my best friends at Visions events.

Looking Ahead with Purpose

As Carlee looks to the future, her ambitions extend far beyond becoming a doctor. She hopes to contribute to advancements in medicine while also preserving its history. In addition, she is passionate about raising awareness of gaps in healthcare and working toward meaningful improvements.

When asked what advice she would give to students considering Visions, she shared: “Visions is a fantastic school. I would recommend it to anyone who is struggling in a traditional school setting.”

Visions looks forward to celebrating Carlee and all of her accomplishments at the graduation ceremony this June. Congratulations, Carlee!

“There are no words to describe all that this school has done for me. I will always be grateful for all of the wonderful people who make Visions as great as it is.”

Rain or Shine, Our Staff is Saving Lives: Visions Staff Blood Drive 2026

Rain or Shine, Our Staff is Saving Lives:
Visions Staff Blood Drive 2026

At Visions, our commitment to serving students goes hand in hand with supporting the communities around us. Whether inside or outside the virtual classroom, we are always looking for meaningful ways to make a difference.

On April 22, Visions proudly hosted a Staff Blood Drive in partnership with Vitalant, resulting in the donation of nearly 40 pints of blood.

The need for blood donations remains critical. Every day across the United States, patients require approximately 30,000 units of red blood cells, along with thousands of units of platelets and plasma. In fact, every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood—making each donation a potentially life-saving act.

Despite some rainfall throughout the day, over 40 dedicated Visions staff members—11 of which were first-time donors—showed up ready to be someone’s lifeline. With each donation capable of saving up to three lives, the collective impact of this effort is significant.

Donations took place in Vitalant bloodmobiles stationed in the parking lot of the Visions office in Gold River.

Among the first to roll up their sleeves were Visions Superintendent & Executive Director Dr. Steve Olmos, Chief Academic Officer Dr. Micah Studer, Chief Strategy Officer Tom Tafoya, and Chief Operations Officer Michael Brubaker.

“I was so proud to see the entire organization and Marketing & Communications team come together to coordinate a successful event that helps make an impact in the community.  Schoolwide, we had over 40+ come together and contribute to this effort!!” – Tom Tafoya, Chief Strategy Officer

We extend our sincere thanks to every Visions staff member who contributed to this life-saving effort. Your generosity and willingness to give back truly embody the spirit of our organization.

About Vitalant

Vitalant strives to unite donors and innovation to save and improve lives. The organization is one of the largest nonprofit, community-based blood service providers in the United States, supplying blood, blood components, and specialized laboratory services to roughly 900 hospitals nationwide. Founded in 1943, it focuses on collecting blood, plasma, and platelets from volunteer donors and operates over 100 donation centers and numerous blood drives.

Student Spotlight: Reeling In Success

The transition from elementary to middle school can be difficult, but Chase G. is proving that with the right attitude, guidance, and dedication – students can grow, succeed, and truly thrive.

This school year, Chase enrolled in Visions’ Online Middle School Academy in search of a learning environment that better fit his needs. In less than a year, he has taken full advantage of academic support, shown initiative in his learning, and made meaningful connections by participating in student activities and events.

“Chase’s journey this year shows how much growth can happen during the transition from elementary to middle school – especially in an online environment where students must take greater responsibility for their learning,” shared Rita Wingfield, Chase’s credentialed teacher.

He is getting the full Visions experience, and making the most of every opportunity.

Stepping Up & Standing Out

Transitioning to middle school and an independent learning model can be a challenge, but Chase rose to the occasion.

While the adjustment took time, Chase worked closely with his teachers to build a learning plan that set him up for success. Over the course of this school year, he has begun taking initiative—asking questions, seeking support when needed, and developing strong study habits to stay on track.

When reflecting on his experience, Chase shared, “My relationship is really good with Mrs. Wingfield and Mr. Perry. They are both always responding when I have questions, and they are just really amazing teachers.”

Mrs. Wingfield has seen his growth firsthand, noting that Chase has truly stepped up this semester by taking initiative and staying focused on his academic goals.

“Today, Chase is thriving in online middle school and demonstrating the responsibility and perseverance that will prepare him well for high school and beyond,” she shared.

Staying Connected & Having Fun

Middle school is an important time for social growth – and for Chase, learning online hasn’t held him back.

In fact, his favorite part of being a Visions student is, “that we get to do regional events and get to socialize still,” he shared.

Chase has participated in a variety of Visions events, including outings to Topgolf and bowling, where he’s been able to meet new friends and build connections beyond the classroom.

Outside of school, Chase enjoys being a fish keeper and loves spending time outdoors fishing and being with family and friends. He’s even been able to explore his interests further through his involvement in the Reptile and Exotic Animal Club at Visions.

Big Goals for the Future

Chase is already thinking ahead and setting goals for his future. He hopes to pursue higher education and one day “become a contractor or engineer for buildings.”

With the work ethic, independence, and confidence he is building now, Chase is laying a strong foundation for success in high school and beyond.

When asked what advice he would give to students considering Visions, Chase explained, “I would tell them it’s a great program … and the teachers are the best. They always respond if you have questions and go out of their way to help you with the things you need.”
