Checkout With Ease: Your Guiding Light To Graduation Day

Checkout With Ease: Your Guiding Light To Graduation Day

At Visions In Education, we pride ourselves on celebrating success. We will host hundreds of students and families each graduation season to prepare them for their biggest success since joining Visions: graduating high school.

Graduation is only possible because of the amazing Grad Team we have to hold and organize our Grad Checkout process. For students, what feels like a seamless process to return technology, pick up, and pay for graduate apparel such as caps, gowns, and stoles, starts long in advance to prepare for our communities.

This year, Visions held four Grad Checkouts across our service areas and extended our hours to reach as many students as possible.

Over these days leading up to graduation, Visions staff has the pleasure of helping celebrate a momentous occasion. Each graduate can take a senior portrait send-off picture used for Graduation. These photos can be accessed on our Facebook page.

See the photo gallery below to see more photos from our Grad Checkouts.

As educators, we recognize that change can be fearful for young minds. Creating a safe space where families can ask questions and become familiarized with our graduation process is key to fostering a positive graduation experience. As our Visions family grows, we will help you each step of the way.

Thank you to our Grad Team for all you do for our Visions community. The preparation and execution of not just one commencement ceremony, but two for all our families!

Before each commencement, our team walked our graduates through a rehearsal walkthrough and prepared for graduates to wait before the big event! Handing our water and snacks while taking pictures of Graduation Caps! You are appreciated in every facet of work even beyond the final turn of the tassel.

See the photo gallery below for more pictures of our amazing staff on commencement day!

Thank you Grad Team, for another successful graduation season. Read more about the Class of 2024 Graduation here. Congratulations to our Class of 2024!

Congratulations Class of 2024!

Congratulations Class of 2024!

On June 5th, 2024, we had the honor of graduating over 1,300 students, the largest graduating class in Visions’ history. At each ceremony, we were graced with student performances, such as singing and tap dancing, and powerful student speeches, and had the pleasure of commemorating this milestone with each and every one of our graduates, their families, and our incredibly dedicated Visions staff.

“Being part of creating meaningful and memorable graduation experiences for our students and their families fills me with a deep sense of fulfillment,” says Angelica Gallardo, Administrative Assistant to the Director of Student Services and Lead Graduation Coordinator.

The Send-Off

Each year, it seems our graduation ceremonies get bigger, louder, and more celebratory. This year’s ceremonies were no exception, and because our Class of 2024 graduates came into high school during the peak of COVID, they exited louder, longer, and with more excitement than ever.

“I am continually in awe and humbled by the students and families that we are able to serve at Visions. Our graduates are truly going to be significant changemakers in the world,” says Director of Student Services Matt Patterson. “Here’s to Visions’ largest graduating class to date!”

From college to the armed forces, our graduates are off to do some amazing things. We are grateful that you chose to spend your high school career with us, and whatever your next chapter may hold, we are already so proud. On behalf of everyone at Visions In Education, congratulations Class of 2024!

Celebrating Pride Month

Celebrating Pride Month

June is recognized as Pride Month, a time to commemorate and recognize the history of activism that has paved the way toward a more equitable society for our LGBTQI+ communities.

“For generations, LGBTQI+ Americans have summoned the courage to live authentically and proudly. We reflect on the progress we have made so far in pursuit of equality, justice, and inclusion. We recommit ourselves to do more to support LGBTQI+ rights at home and around the world.” – President Joseph R. Biden in his May 31, 2024 Proclamation of LGBTQI+ Month.

Visions In Education is proud to serve and celebrate our diverse group of staff, students and families and recognizes the storied history of the LGBTQI+ community and their fight for equality.

The Moments That Make Us: A Spotlight On Tony Cervo

The Moments That Make Us: A Spotlight on Tony Cervo

Tony Cervo and Tom Tafoya go way back. From 2001-2006, Tony was a District Webmaster for the San Unified School District. During his time there, he was put on a Request for Proposal committee that was tasked with replacing the district financial system. There, he met fellow committee member Tom, and their working relationship began.

“During my time with Tony at SJUSD, he was known to be knowledgeable and capable, which is why I asked him to join me at Visions,” says Chief Operations Officer Tom Tafoya.

“A few years later, after Tom had moved to Visions, he called and asked if I wanted to come to Visions. He wanted a complete overhaul of the Visions website, and also needed someone to do IT support for both teachers and staff,” says Tony. “The San Juan IT Department was in a state of flux at the time, so I took the opportunity to move on. So, in June of 2006, I started working at Visions.”

Beginning as an IT Specialist, Tony was responsible for website support and updates and tech-related professional development for both teachers and staff. Then, in January of 2014, Tony moved to a Programmer position and has since been part of many initiatives, including helping train staff with the retooling and maintenance of our websites, integrating systems with The Wire, our websites and LPAD (including our ordering systems), and maintaining content for the Technology Services Department within The Wire.

“Through his many years at Visions, Tony developed a lot of skills not just in technology, but also in communicating with users and the look and feel of LPAD,” explains Michael Miller, Technology Services Manager. “He regularly handled recurring tasks that others weren’t even thinking of, and we could always count on him to give his honest opinion on plans, communications, documentation, and styling.”

“Over the years, I have appreciated (mostly) Tony’s willingness to share his thoughts and opinions,” says Tom. “His willingness to question our thinking created opportunities for us to develop better solutions for the school and our students.”

No Pun Intended

During his 18 years with Visions, Tony learned, grew, and became a core member of our amazing IT team. Their twice-daily check-ins and bi-weekly meetings were a reflection not only of their 1% better every day efforts, but of all the ways that their department continues to impact the organization.

“The IT team is great! We were very collaborative and bounced ideas off each other all the time,” says Tony. “[We] looked ahead to what we had coming up. All of [this] helped us to improve as we went along.”

For Tony, the best things about working at Visions were the people and the work-life balance, but his favorite thing?

“The teamwork and shared vision (no pun intended).”

The End of an Era

On June 5th, 2024, Tony showed up to Memorial Auditorium to close out his time with Visions in the biggest and best way possible – taking pictures at our graduation ceremonies. A prolific photographer, Tony has been assisting the Marketing team for the past few years, and has captured some of our students’ best moments.

“I had the honor of working with Tony on both graduation photography and countless IT projects. His photos always stood out and made our graduates look like the rockstars they are,” says Justina Janas, Marketing and Communications Analyst. “On the tech side, he was always quick to lend a helping hand and even showed me a few WordPress and coding tricks along the way. His contributions to Visions will be missed.”

Click to see some of Tony’s photos from our 2024 graduation ceremonies below!

Tony’s photography won’t stop there, however. His post-retirement plans include wine tasting, traveling (Tokyo in June!), and continuing his favorite side hustle – concert photography.

“In the past, I’ve shot the likes of Elton John, Lorde, Depeche Mode, Descendents, Ziggy Marley, The Avett Brothers, and more,” says Tony.

He also plans to spend his time hanging out with family, reading, and spoiling his cats.

Tony, thank you for all that you’ve done during your time at Visions. We wish you nothing but the best in all of your next adventures!

Fun Facts About Tony:

He was born in Stockton, CA and would often come to Sacramento on weekends to go to concerts or all-ages dance clubs (since he was still in high school).

He graduated from San Diego Sate University with a degree in Production and Operations Management.

He plays the drums (through not actively for a while… which he’s hoping to change now that he’s retired).

He’s written three letters to the editor of local newspapers (back when we had newspapers), and all three were published.

His favorite holiday is Halloween and he tends to go all out for his costumes.

He loves to cook! He makes dinner for the family almost every night.

Grad Spotlight: Defying the Odds

Grad Spotlight: Defying the Odds

At Visions’ 2024 graduation ceremony, senior Jesus L. stood on the Memorial Auditorium stage and gave a speech about his time at Visions. He spoke of his academic journey, his gratitude for staff, and his plans for the future, but what the crowd of peers, friends, and families didn’t know was that Jesus shouldn’t have even been on the stage that day.

A few years before graduation, Jesus and his family were unhoused. They had moved to California during the height of the pandemic, and Jesus was struggling with distance learning in his traditional brick and mortar school. Only a freshman, that should have been the time that Jesus was putting his graduation goal in motion, but life circumstances and lack of support prevented him from getting on the right track.

“While school was in distance learning, I found it hard to focus on school and many things in general,” shares Jesus. “When life had settled around the start of my 11th-grade year, I had decided to get back into school as I knew it was necessary. I enrolled in a local high school and I found the treatment of me as a student to be lacking. They had wanted to place me back into 9th grade and my graduation date was well beyond what I wanted.”

Jesus and his family eventually heard about Visions, and after only one interaction with Visions staff, knew it was the right fit for them.

“One phone call showed us more hospitality and understanding than we had experienced in my whole time coordinating with the local high school,” says Jesus. “They had me signed up for the next semester and that is when my journey at Visions started.”

A Second Chance

On paper, Jesus graduating on time looked impossible. Due to his difficulties at his former school, he was extremely credit deficient, and as an 11th grader, it looked like there was no way he would be able to catch up in time to graduate with his expected class.

But Jesus’ Independent Study Academy teachers, Jason Railing and Carolyn Foote, and counselors, Rija Gorkhali and Estrella Rosales, saw the potential in Jesus.

“Right from the start, Jesus showed remarkable motivation to achieve graduation,” says Rija. “When he realized that graduation [was] achievable, he seized the opportunity. Jesus dedicated himself wholeheartedly to his goal, not only aiming for graduation, but striving for more.”

While working with his teachers and counselors, Jesus felt respected, supported, and seen as an individual. The flexibility and personalized attention that he received afforded him access to important resources like school supplies and driver’s education, and helped put him back on track to graduate.

“With traditional school I felt restricted in what I could do. It is very scheduled and rigid in the sense that things are plotted out and without much flexibility. Ultimately I felt with traditional school that my time was being wasted, with the scheduling they gave me I wouldn’t be able to graduate until I was 19-20 and I was stuck in 9th grade classes,” explains Jesus. “Visions seemed to respect me as an individual enough to place me in my correct grade and allowed me to complete extra classes. With Visions, my time wasn’t wasted. I was able to add classes and attend summer school to fix my credits. There would be no way in a traditional setting that I could have done what I did at Visions.”

From Credit Deficient to Class of 2024 Graduate

Despite his remarkable comeback, what Jesus did wasn’t easy. He worked hard every single day to catch up to his peers, attending summer school, staying up late to finish his school work, and at one point, even completing 1-2 classes every week.

But Jesus’ efforts didn’t stop there. After receiving an email from Visions saying that he had been selected as one of the students for our reduced credit graduation, Jesus took this opportunity to strive for an even greater goal than graduating.

“This was an act of great grace given to me, and in my mind I couldn’t let such a thing go to waste,” shares Jesus. “Where before the goal was simply to graduate, my new goal was to go to college, which was never something I thought possible beforehand.”

With the support, resources, and time that Visions gave to Jesus, after a year and a half of hard work, he found himself graduating with the Class of 2024, heading to Rowan University on a scholarship, and sharing his story in front of thousands of people on graduation day (see below).

“My motivation to fix my grades was due to a variety of factors, but at the heart of it all was wishing better for myself. I saw what poverty can do to someone first hand. I had no money or resources to turn my life around any other way but education. If I was to achieve anything in life I had to start the journey.”

A Lifelong Impact

Jesus still isn’t used to his successes. It’s the people around him – his family, his girlfriend, and Visions staff – who remind him of all that he’s accomplished during his time here.

“In my mind I am still the same student who was used to not succeeding. I read emails and texts from either Visions or colleges and think, ‘You’re talking about me?’. I was accepted into a nice school with a nice scholarship, something I never would have thought could be possible for me, and if the person I was when I was 12-15 saw who I am today, they would not believe that I was really them. I am beyond grateful for all the successes I enjoy today.”

When asked how he would describe his experience with Visions, Jesus simply said, “My time at Visions was that of redemption, a triumph over all the sufferings of my life, and a dedication to something greater.”Jesus now feels empowered and excited to build something with his life, a testament to the way that Visions can change lives.

“I would simply like to add how grateful I am for Visions. Without their help I would never be where I am today. They were the ones who gave me a chance and treated me with the respect and grace I needed to succeed. Too much does it seem that people are not dedicated to what they claim, but the same could not be said for the people at Visions.I feel that truly and honestly everyone in the organization has a great dedication to education that is truly admirable.”

To Other Students Like Jesus…

“The best thing someone can do is to realize that you are the defining factor in [your] situation. Whilst many things can happen in life, you are the only one who can bring about change. The hardest part of this process is to start, building the work ethic to succeed is quite the undertaking, but once you are able to, it becomes second nature. Hard work is something that will be non-negotiable, you will have to do things that seem tedious or daunting, again and again, but you must realize that you are stronger than anything in front of you.”

Visions’ eSports Club Captures 1st Place!

Visions’ eSports Club Captures 1st Place!

Visions’ eSports club celebrated another year of success by taking home the 1st place trophy at this year’s eSports club championship!

Started as a pilot program by Visions staff in partnership with EliteGaming LIVE (EGL), the eSports club combines STEM classes with eSport competition as incentive, requiring all students in the class to complete a certain amount of technology electives to qualify for the final competition.

“Many of our students really liked the EGL curriculum,” says Visions’ Director of Technology and club coach Uriel Gonzalez. “They’ve shown interest in technology as a result of being a part of this club.”

Smashing It

Each year, the club’s game of choice has been Super Smash Brothers Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch. Under the supervision of Visions coaches, the e-Gaming Club met weekly online and at Visions In Education headquarters to practice and compete in ranked matches throughout the year. At the championship match, Visions students went head-to-head with their fellow club members and students from other schools.

Our team of students all performed amazingly, with Visions clinching 1st place thanks to 10th grader Ezra P.!

Congratulations to our e-Sports team on their championship win! Thank you to all the parents and family who supported our students’ success, and a big thank you to Uriel Gonzalez and Matthew Mueller for coaching our students and guiding them through this program!

Celebrating Our 8th Grade Grads!

Celebrating Our 8th Grade Grads!

In three different ceremonies throughout our service area, Visions staff, family and friends gathered to celebrate the graduation of our 8th grade students. As they walked across the stage, our graduates were recognized for their hard work and officially sent off to high school with words of encouragement and gratitude from Visions leadership.

“8th grade promotions highlight and celebrate all the hard work of our students and families to create a successful educational base at Visions,” says Home School Academy Principal Heidi Perry. “To the graduates, I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations. Each one of you has demonstrated exceptional commitment and resilience throughout your academic endeavors. I’m so grateful to have been able to celebrate this very special day with you.”

Supporting Our Students

Every year, our 8th Grade Promotion ceremonies are an opportunity to look back on all that our students have achieved and look forward to all that they will continue to accomplish in the future. Surrounded by the people who helped them reach this milestone, these ceremonies are a way to honor both the students and those who supported them throughout their educational journeys thus far.

Thank you to all of the families and Visions staff that joined us to commemorate this milestone. Congratulations again to our 8th grade grads, and we wish you all the best in your next endeavors!

Zombies, Meet Your Match: Visions’ Drama Club Takes On The Apocalypse

Zombies, Meet Your Match: Visions’ Drama Club Takes On The Apocalypse

On Friday, May 31st, Visions In Education’s Drama Club performed, “10 Ways To Survive The Zombie Apocalypse” in front of a live audience.

A comedy; this play revolves around the idea of a zombie apocalypse coming to life. Thespians were put in the situation of rampaging zombies, needing to be quick-witted in decision-making while writing the ultimate guide on survival.

Knowledgeable and armed with their books, the characters used different means of defense such as throwing the slowest person down first, roasting the zombies with light humorous insults, and therapy sessions with a zombie collegiate expert.

This hilarious show was directed by Visions teacher, Leslie Simpson. Simpson organized rehearsals with students and also built custom sets for the play!

In addition to the set design and acting, the audience was treated to live music and sound effects to accompany the show. Visions student and pianist Desmond N. composed original music and performed as the Accompanist.

Narrators Tori F. and Aliannah R. kept the pace for the play as our characters focused on staying alive! Actors Jonathan R., Jade J., Hailesalausie R., Lyrik R., Peitiula N., Aniyah T., Mariah T. and Maeve N. delivered a wonderful performance for our Visions community.

View our photo gallery below to see more pictures from the play!

Thank you to Tania H. and Mariana R. for capturing these photos.

Our audience walked away knowledgeable and prepared to defend in the case of a zombie apocalypse.

Congratulations to the cast, Drama Club advisor and all who had a hand in putting together this spectacular rendition of “10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse.”
